3) President’s report: Gary reported on a variety of topics including:
a. Carp: There is still no market for them, so getting a third party in to net them and remove some of them. Our trap in culvert is continuing to do its job, the carp can leave the lake and get to the slough across the road, but they can’t get come back. They will eventually die in the slough due to winter freeze out.
b. Wildflower Seeds: The board purchased wild flower seeds and small disposable cups. Gary and his wife, Sharon, filled the cups with seeds and the board had them for distribution at the meeting. Association members are encouraged to grab a cup or two and plant them on their property. The flowers will be good for pollinator insects and also can provide a filter to run off of rainwater from lawns into the lake. Dave did the on his property along the lakeshore a few years ago. He said it can take a couple years for the flowers to really take off.
c. New Directories: The 2025 directories are completed and they were made available to members as they paid their dues when they came into the meeting. A new feature this year is a section where names are listed alphabetically to make
it easier for people to find each other in the directory.d. Zebra Mussels: The number increased again last year, as expected. One thing that will need to be monitored is the effect of the zebra mussels on the mercury level in the lake. Our lake is not currently listed by the DNR as a high mercury lake. Younger children and pregnant women are encouraged by the DNR to limit fish consumption to one meal a week as a safety precaution.
e. Walleye Stocking: The association stocked walleyes last fall, thus as you noticed the walleye fund in the treasurer’s report was down close to empty. Members who enjoy fishing the lake are encouraged to contribute to the walleye fund to build it up before fall of 2026. This fall is the DNR’s turn in the every other year rotation to stock walleyes. Brandon Sportsman’s Club has contributed $500 to our stocking each time we have done it. We thank them for that.
f. Creel Survey: This spring the DNR did a creel survey of the lake. This is a process that is done every four years and involves placing nets in various spots on the lake and recording the number of fish of each species that are caught. A small percentage of the fish are kept by the DNR for age and health testing. Results of the survey will be posted on the DNR website upon its completion.
g. Les’s hard work: Gary thanked Les and his wife for all of their hard work on the directory again this time around. They sold all of the advertising for the directory and also distributed copies to local fire departments. Les also does water survey sampling for the lake, as well as elevation reporting. The lake is up about 6” from last year. In May the water clarity in 16ft of water was 10ft down. In June that same measurement had the clarity at 6ft down in 16ft of water.
h. Algae bloom: The algae bloom we are seeing is a normal cycle of a lake and his been happening for 100’s of years. High heat and humidity, as well as lake depth are contributing factors. Many lakes in the area are experiencing the same thing.
i. Boat Parade: Thanks again to the Ewins family for organizing the boat parade again this year. 26 boats participated this year, which was a new record. 70 people gathered at the access at the conclusion of the parade and enjoyed hot dogs, chips, and water donated by the association. A good time of fellowship was had by all.
j. Door Prize: Carol McCannon had a handmade Red Rock hand towel available as door prize at the meeting. The winner was Irv Arnquist. Thanks Carol!!
k. Guest Speaker: We were unable to secure a speaker this year, due to the meeting being the day after the 4th. Next year’s meeting will be a week after the 4th (July 11th), so we may have better luck finding someone.
4) Open discussion:
a. Marge Zakrzewski spoke about the Hoffman Senior Center and encourage people to check it out and support to the center. They have meals available for pick up Mon-Fri (call ahead), coffee and rolls on Weds mornings, whist games every Monday afternoon, and Bingo every Friday night at 7:00.
b. Roger McCannon encouraged others to consider becoming a board member. He shared what a great experience it had been for him.
c. A reminder was made to watch the Red Rock Facebook pages for upcoming events (official and unofficial), items for sale, lost pets, etc. Richard monitors the membership and noted that if you your request to become a member of the page was rejected, to reach out to him and he would take care of it.
d. Members were encouraged to support businesses that have supported us by buying ads in the annual directory.
e. Concern was raised about how full the access has been and how many of the fish we are stocking are leaving through the access. It is a sign of healthy lake and since the lake is public lake, there is not a lot the can be done to regulate who gets to catch the fish.
f. A reminder to all to slow down on the roads around the lake. We have a lot of young children and walkers/runners. In addition, slower speeds help to keep the dust down.
Next Annual Meeting: 10:00 am Saturday, July 11th, 2026 (more details to come)
Respectfully submitted,
Scott Rortvedt
